It is a program for New York City youth, which provides hands-on professional and artistic training in technology, film and media. The program addresses the widening skills gap among low-income people and communities, left behind in the increasingly global marketplace. With a growing demand for specialized skills in media and technology-based jobs ,the program is a critical step towards meeting one of education's biggest challenges; graduating the labor force of the 21st century.

The three to six-month program is an exploration of media in young people's lives and the technology that fuels their curiosity. Incorporating analysis and hands-on instruction to the curriculum, The Dare to Dream Project develops the participant's point of view, engaging them in civics and social issues that affect them as individuals. Focused on students that are of a critical age in their adolescences, many of the middle and high school students in the program are at-risk of experiencing violence, dropping out of school and underemployment in their near future. Media becomes an outlet for these students, who are mentored and encouraged to think outside of the box. Their experiences are captured on video, culminating in a special screening of student films and multimedia projects for others to learn from.

2010 Vision

After 3 years and successful partnerships/collaborations with The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, The Fund for New York, The Queens Museum of Art, The Franklin H. Williams Caribbean Cultural Center/African Diaspora Institute and The Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center; the expectation and goals for 2010 are high. They include expanding the program to meet the needs of young women (12-18), working together with faith-based organizations that serve youth, media exchange with students in Los Angeles, California and professional internships with reputable companies in the fields of art, media, design and technology.

Topics Include:
Women and the Entertainment Industry
Women's Role in the Media
Domestic Violence
Teen Pregnancy
College and Beyond
Youth Employment

2009 Dare to Dream Media Arts Festival Schedule

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 391px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9QOu70UNigE/Se3v4Rn3STI/AAAAAAAAAl0/0Dn8NN4Jbv0/s400/dtd_2009_v03.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5327177684331481394" />

2009 Dare to Dream Media and Arts Festival Schedule

On Exhibit

Stephanie Mathews -
Kablang!
acrylic on canvas
18" x 24"

"Kablang! is a visual translation of my jump from calmer origins into
the vibrant chaos that is New York City: colorful characters,
intriguing sights and smells, big dreams, 8 million stories & not a
minute to slow down. It is a historic moment for this particular endeavor and a historic moment for youth media in general.

The Dare to Dream Project was conceived for the purpose of providing youth in communities largely populated by recent and long-term immigrants, with a curriculum centered on media literacy and arts in a project-based learning environment. Emphasizing a hands-on approach to learning, students are led in discussions, shown media, and given projects to work on focused on using media to discuss the topics of immigration and culture.

The 4-month program culminates during New York City's Immigrant Heritage Week, when students from media and arts programs in the 5 boroughs have an opportunity to display and discuss their work during the inaugural Dare to Dream Media and Arts Festival. The event will provide additional youth made media content to an already rich participation of distinguished groups and organizations celebrating immigrant history.

To sign up for our email announcements of the events and locations of the Dare to Dream Media Festival, click here to be added to our list.

If you are a youth artist or educator, please consider submitting a project for the Media and Arts Festival. Our imagination is central to our discoveries and without it we are just mechanical and non-organic. It is now, at the end of 2007, that I can proclaim that the entire year was nothing but a dream. My deep appreciation for the imagination and my respect for the law of nature (every action causes a reaction), humbles me as I count the blessings of this past year and look forward to the many to come in 2008. The Dare to Dream Project will be the truest proof of our ability to transform dreams into reality.

Please, be inspired to comment on any of the forthcoming posts or to communicate in any way, shape or form you desire. Create a connection with this project and be responsible for it's growth and expansion.
